Zimbabwean gospel hip-hop artist REAP3R, the reigning Best Gospel Act at the Zim Hip-Hop Awards, has taken his artistry to new heights with the release of the Deluxe Edition of his sophomore album, U R3AP WHAT U SOW. This extended version adds four new tracks to the critically acclaimed project, which was originally released in December of last year.
The decision to drop a deluxe edition stemmed from REAP3R’s desire to continue the immersive experience that fans embraced during the initial rollout of U R3AP WHAT U SOW. True to his signature style, the expanded album features introspective storytelling and lyricism deeply rooted in Christian faith. Collaborations on the deluxe edition include longtime collaborator SoulDeep ZIM, as well as renowned gospel rappers Blueprint and KiriPsalma. Production credits are shared among Crae la’shae, McZee, Yoshin, and VI The Law, who also handled engineering alongside Rayobeats.
Hip-hop in Zimbabwe may have had a slower start compared to its neighbor South Africa, but artists like REAP3R are steadily carving out their place within the genre. Based in Harare, REAP3R began his musical journey in 2008, drawing inspiration from the vibrant hip-hop culture around him. Over the years, he has released two mixtapes, three EPs, and two full-length albums—The Boom Baptist and U R3AP WHAT U SOW. His debut album, The Boom Baptist, earned him a nomination at the 2021 Zim Hip-Hop Awards in the Best Underground Category.
REAP3R doesn’t shy away from addressing pressing issues affecting Zimbabweans. For instance, “Hello Zimbabwe,” a standout track from The Boom Baptist, speaks directly to the economic struggles caused by hyperinflation, urging listeners to persevere despite adversity. Through his music, REAP3R amplifies the frustrations of communities grappling with limited progress while confronting political corruption and intimidation tactics employed by leaders such as President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
A Milestone Win and Growing Recognition
In 2024, REAP3R claimed the prestigious Best Gospel Act award at the Zim Hip-Hop Awards—a testament to his growing influence in both gospel and mainstream circles. Accepting the honor, he emphasized its significance beyond personal achievement, stating, “Winning this award is not just about me; it’s a platform to spread the message of faith.”
His unique sound blends boom bap, jazz hop, and modern production techniques with thought-provoking lyrics. Drawing inspiration from legendary acts like Lupe Fiasco, Logic, Kendrick Lamar, Jackie Hill-Perry, AKA, and Tehn Diamond—as well as producers like Swindle and The Alchemist—REAP3R delivers tongue-in-cheek motivational messages and socially conscious commentary firmly grounded in his Christian beliefs.
Gospel hip-hop continues to gain momentum globally, resonating particularly with younger audiences eager to express their faith through contemporary sounds. REAP3R’s success underscores the subgenre’s increasing acceptance within mainstream music.
